Growing your own vegetables is a great way to save money while developing a healthier diet. For individuals with little to no experience as a gardener, there are a number of vegetables that are relatively simple to grow. Lettuces, for example, are best suited to the cooler temperatures of the spring or fall, but otherwise require little effort. They also mature quickly, in about three to four weeks, and are easily grown in containers.

Green beans are another good choice for gardeners with little experience. Green bean seeds should be planted about one to two inches beneath the soil, which must be watered immediately after planting and often until the beans sprout. As legumes, green beans produce their own nitrogen and do not usually require fertilizer. Other simple vegetables to grow include cucumbers, tomatoes, and bell peppers.
